Thirteen Greendowners keenly contested the second edition of Dads & Lads on Saturday January 10th.
Once Mr Radford had squared the handicap system will all participants, Doug introduced Dom and Dave, and then all five of us with Mr Pocock ran through our order of events and their rulings.
The Lads that had keenly contested the warm up sessions also wondered where Kayleigh was and wanted her back to help them again!
Points were available to be given by one of the 5 instructors for any one of the following things: winning a game, losing a game in the right spirit, helping an opponent in any way, being a good sport so you really were being a “Greendowner” and “Thinking of the other Dad and Lad!”
Dodgeball had a warm up to it and then various games which were enjoyed by all. It was fun and certainly woke us up at 9 a.m! [see photo 235]
Then we played Ultimate Frisbee which was absolutely brilliant. It really made for building of strong team ethic with 2 Dads and 2 Lads on a team, Doug even had the great idea of including an instructor on each team [see photo 224] so we got to run about purposefully too!
All the time us instructors were keenly seeking sporting moments of prowess or just as importantly acts of kindness to reward Lads and Dads equally with points towards the medal table.
Each instructor, unknown to the contestants, had a Special Award medal to give to someone at the end for who they saw fit, and to tell us why we had chosen that particular Lad ... or Dad!
Danish Long Ball followed set up by Mr Pocock, it saw plenty of runs being scored and teams scratching their heads as to how to sort out their tactics, not as easy as it seems!
Then Mr Pocock set his footy challenge, a battle against the clock but trying to score goals too. Teams scored points not only for scoring goals but for their timing, good saves and also the way they encouraged each other. [see photo 253]
We finished with a customary penalty shoot out.

the Lads then received their medals and the Special Awards came as a surprise to them. Each Instructor told the whole group why each person got their special award.
Pedro handed over the glory of being first champion; Hadyn, Callum and Josh were battling it out but were pipped in the end by a superb finish from Aiden! Pedro is resigned to a 7th placed finish but keeps a replica of his trophy. He still loved the photo shoot handing over his title! [see photo 267]
Aiden will defend his with pride next time, his Dad was walking around saying “I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it”; like he had just won the Cup! He had!
Every one of you be proud of your attitude and the spirit you brought and shared at our Second Dads and Lads.
