Four groups of year 8 students travelled to Commonweal School with our teacher Miss. Bourton to take part in a performance poetry competition called the 'poetry slam'. The two hosts Marcus Moore and Sarah-Jane Arbury asked us to take part in many different drama activities including acting as a family and creating a full working cuckoo clock using our bodies. After this, the hosts gave us inspiration for our own poems by reading their own work to us. We now set to work on our own poems for the main competition. There were many different theme's of poems from different groups which made the judging more interesting, as we had to perform our original poems to the other groups. The poems with the most actions and feeling went through to the final slam which will take place on Saturday the 9th May. Two groups from Greendown including students; Faye Rogers, Jess Harmer, Jenni Walker and Becca Nicholls in one group and Zoe Samwell, Amreen Hussain, Sophie Wood and Kara Sloan in the other group managed to get to the final. Our poems will be performed on the 9th so wish us luck!

POSTCRIPT UPDATE from Tanya Bourton - teacher.....
Unfortunately, we did not make the final. It did not help that other schools had a lot of louder supporters which seems to sway the markers! Unfair but that is how it goes.
On a positive note, we can be very proud of the two groups as they were brilliant and behaved much better than other groups. They were an absolute credit to our school and to themselves. I was so proud of them and their efforts. My parents came along and told me how wonderful our pupils were, on stage and in general behaviour.
Thanks goes to Cathy, Nikki and Jon Young who all came along to support the teams. Also, thanks to the teachers who allowed me to take the pupils out of lessons.
Finally, we must thank the pupils who worked so hard and did us all proud.

Well done to all of the 'poetry slammers' from Greendown.
Well done aslo to all of the journalists on GMag. It's a good read.
I came to watch the poetry slam and thought the Greendown students were excellent. I couldn't believe it when none of your groups got through as the poems were exceptional. You got more marks than some people in the final and I don't think the judging was fair, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Well done poets. I would love to hear your work in the future!
